Vision Statement for READ ACROSS THE PRAIRIE

To promote reading for pleasure at all ages with no restrictions, limitations, or requirements in order to become a community of readers.

Belief Statements:

  • We believe reading for pleasure with no restrictions, limitations, or requirements establishes a rewarding habit that lasts a lifetime.
  • We believe that the regular practice of reading leads to strong reading skills that are crucial for a lifetime of enjoyment and accomplishment.
  • We believe that all members of the community serve as role models when they read for pleasure and enjoyment.
  • We believe fostering the love of reading is a gift of incalculable worth and is as important as teaching the skill of reading.
  • We believe that avid readers are better thinkers and problem solvers in our global society and are a sound investment in the future of tomorrow’s leaders.

We invite you to join our community of readers and make it your own within the following parameters:

  1. The program must be registered and permission must be obtained from the Grand Prairie Independent School District to use the Read Across the Prairie Initiative.  (See Form)
  2. The program name must contain the slogan Read Across the Prairie.  The program may be individualized but must be approved by the Grand Prairie Independent School District.  (Example:  Read Across the Prairie: London)

  3. The program must maintain and preserve the TM of Read Across the Prairie initiative and must be included on all incentives, advertisements and publications.

  4. The program must support the vision and belief statements as stated. 

  5. The program must not be tied to any other formal reading program, grade, or imposed reading requirements such as:
  • Time requirements
  • Book format  (for example, audio books are acceptable)
  • Genre or type of book 
  • Reading level
