The SDFSC Purpose:

The purpose of the Safe and Drug Free School & Communities Program is to support public schools in the development and implementation of education programs for all students and employees to prevent drug use and violence.

      The Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities funding provides for prevention programming for students and schools. Current guidelines for these funds include three 'principles of effectiveness' that programs must follow.

      The role of the Safe and Drug Free Schools & Communities Coodinator is as follows:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs consultant
  • Accessibility and consultation to students, parents, staff and community
  • Crisis Team Leader
  • Suicide assessment consultant
  • Child abuse reporting consultant
  • Professional staff development
  • Presentations on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
  • Parent facilitator / educator
  • Organizes community events
  • Human Coalition Member
  • Develop and evaluate drug and alcohol curriculum and programs
Minor in Possession/Alcohol
Awareness Class
In accordance with Senate Bill 35 enated in September 1997, minors cited for various alcohol-related offenses such as Minor In Possession, DUI, Comsumption and Attempted Purchase may be ordered to an alcohol awareness class. The class is six hours (two-3 hour classes) in length. During registration, students must arrange to be screened prior to attending class. In addition, to receive the required court documentation, the student must be present for the Exit Interview, which occurs after the second class session. Grand Prairie I.S.D. provides the Minor in Possession Alcohol Awareness Class for $50.
