Sir Cumference – The Tree Measurer
Directions:
Begin the lesson by discussing what different animals are supported by the existence of the tree. Reinforce or introduce the word "circumference" and how you measure it. Show the students the side of the tape that they will be using (inches).
Then have the students work in pairs to measure the 5 trees listed below. Have them estimate their measurements first, before they make their exact measurements with the tape.
Find the following trees using the signs posted next to the trees.
1. Estimate how many inches the circumference of the tree is.
2. Using a tape measure, find the exact circumference of the tree trunk
3. Record how many inches the circumference of the tree is.
