Grade 1 - 1st Six Weeks

Below are ideas for technology integration that support the 1st six weeks grading period in Grade 1. Contact your Technology Facilitator for assistance.

Unit 01   Family Relationships
Lesson 01   There Are Many Kinds of Families
Curriculum activity:   Tell a story through dictation or writing and pictures about a fun day you had with your family. Illustrate the story. Share your story by reading out loud to others in the class.
Technology idea:   My Fun Day
    Students will use Kid Pix to illustrate a fun day with their family. Students will use the drawing and paint tools. Students will also use the text box tool to write about their fun day.
     
Curriculum activity:   Create a large Venn Diagram on the board or
on chart paper. On the left side write the title of the
first family book. On the right side, write the title of
the second family book.  Explain the Venn Diagram to the students. Tell them that we use a Venn Diagram to compare how two things are alike and different.
Technology idea 1   Teachers can use this Venn Diagram Template to complete this curriculum activity with their students in one whole group.
     
Unit 02   Family Relationships
Lesson 02   Reading, Retelling and Spelling Words About Families
Curriculum activity:   Students review the alphabet using songs, pointers, and alphabet arcs. They continue their work with word families.
Technology idea:   Making Word Families
    Students will use Microsoft Word to make word families. Students will type five words below each title word.  In the last column, students will write their own word and five word families for their new word. Making Word Families Template
     
Unit 02   Family Relationships
Lesson 04   Story Characters Are Like Our Family
Curriculum activity:   By thinking about characters in movies and books they have read, students explore how a character in the story may be like someone in their own family. They compare and contrast a character with a family member by illustrating, writing a one sentence description, and writing the names of each using a capital letter for the proper noun.
Technology idea:   Comparing My Family and Story Characters
    Students use Kid Pix to draw a picture of a family member and a character in a story.  They will use the text tool to type a one sentence description and then type the name of each.

Unit 03   Repeating Patterns  
Lesson 01   Repeating Patterns
Curriculum activity:   The purpose of this lesson is define the core within a repeating pattern and descibe its differences and similarities.
Technology idea:   Patterns Everywhere
    Using edClass activBook e329, students create 'ab', 'abc', and 'abb' patterns on Excel worksheets by using the Fill Color option from a customized Drawing toolbar.
     
Unit 2   Model Story Problems
Lesson 1   Simple Story Problems
Curriculum activity:   The purpose of this lesson is to focus on the actions used to solve simple story problems.
Technology idea:   Division by Partition
    In edClass activebook e354, students solve subtraction problems using words, numbers and models.

Unit 02   Investigating Weather
Lesson 02   Forms of Precipitation
Curriculum activity:   Students will show an understanding of how changes in weather affect them
Technology idea:   Clouds
    After viewing and discussing pictures of cloud types, students use edClass activBook e708 to create scenes that demonstrate how the weather affects our daily activities.
