Grade 2 - 1st Six Weeks

Below are ideas for technology integration that support the 1st six weeks grading period in Grade 2. Contact your Technology Facilitator for assistance.

Unit 1   My Everyday Patterns
Lesson 1   Patterns Help Us Learn
Curriculum activity:   Pattern Hunt: Assign each student a partner. Ask
each pair to move around the room for 15-20 minutes and look for patterns. Tell them to write something about each pattern they see in their journals. They can draw a picture of the pattern if they want to.
Technology idea:   Digital Camera, MS Word or MS Publisher
    Students can use the digital camera to take photos of patterns around the room. The photos could be inserted into MS Word or Publisher. Then, students would write about the patterns to fulfill the required activity.

Unit 2   Addition/Subtraction with Hundreds Chart
Lesson 1   Patterns in the 100s Chart
Curriculum activity:   Students will study the 100s chart with their
partners and describe to their partner the number patterns they observe.
Technology idea:

    Students use one of the AmbleWeb Interactive Hundred's Boards to observe and discuss number patterns.

Unit 2   Change Occurs
Lesson 2   Change Occurs: Identifying Change
Curriculum activity:   Using apple slices and a dehydrator, students can
observe changes in size, color and mass of the apple slices before and after dehydration. Observe objects (or pictures of objects) and explain orally or in writing the changes that have occurred, including changes in size, mass.
Technology idea:   Digital Camera/Power Point or MS Publisher
    Students use the digital camera to take photos of the apple slices to record the changes. Then, the photos could be inserted into MS Power Point or MS Publisher. Students would use one of the MS Office applications to write about the changes that occured, such as size and mass.

Unit 1   Elements of a Community
Lesson 1   Characteristics of a Community
Curriculum activity:   The teacher will give each student a piece of drawing paper. The student will illustrate one community to which they belong. The student will then write to describe the community, the members who belong to the community and the purpose of belonging to the community.
Technology idea:   MS Paint
    Students use MS Paint to create a document that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 1   Elements of a Community
Lesson 1   Characteristics of a Community
Curriculum activity:   Groups of students will work together to present
information about the person they learned about and how that person impacted the community.
Technology idea:   MS Publisher
    Students use MS Publisher to create a poster about the person to use during their presentation.

Lesson 5   Social Influences, Customs, Symbols and Celebrations
Curriculum activity:   Write an acrostic poem to explain how the
customs, symbols, and celebrations of the

    Students use MS Publisher to create an acrostic poem that fulfills this requirement.

Read, Write, Think: Acrostic Poems

    Students use the Read, Write, Think Acrostic Poems web site to write a poem that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 1   Elements of a Community
Lesson 6   Review of Social, Geographic, Political and Economic Influences on a Community
Curriculum activity:   Students will analyze a picture of a community and identify on a graphic organizer the political, economic, social, and geographic factors shown.
Technology idea:   Kidspiration
    Students use Kidspiration to create a graphic organizer that fulfills this requirement.
