| Curriculum activity: | The students will explore invitations and advertisements as examples of nonfiction writing. They will then develop a rubric to judge the effectiveness of their writing, and use it to develop a traditional invitation and an invitation in the form of a friendly letter. Students will also identify and compare the themes across stories. | |

| Curriculum activity: | Description: Explain to students that they will be going outside on a nature walk to make observations about the world around them. Tell students they will be responsible for filling in the handout: Nature Walk Color Observation Chart in their groups. | |
| Technology idea: | Digital Camera | |
| Students use the digital camera to take photos of objects from nature that has the colors from their charts. Students could share their photos with the class, as they discuss their observations about colors and the weather around them. Also, the photos could be inserted into a MS Office application to create a poster or book. | ||

| Students use word processing to edit sentences about seasons. Students replace text, copy and paste words into a table, and change font color. They also search for and add clip art to illustrate each season. | ||

| Unit 5 | Our American Community Celebrations and Symbols | |
| Lesson 3 | Celebrations of Texas and the United States | |
| Curriculum activity: | Description: The students will explain the significance of various celebrations. The student will create a poster for one of the celebrations learned in this lesson, Texas Independence Day or Thanksgiving. The poster should include a visual of the celebration along with reasons why it is important for the people of the state or nation to celebrate this event. The student should also include information on how this historical event is related to freedom. Students will mention how celebrations unite us and remind us of what is important and how they emphasize what makes us unique as a people and help forge a bond through shared experiences. | |

They will take on the ROLE of themselves and write a letter (FORMAT) to their parents (AUDIENCE) about what the words freedom, independence, and national identity mean in terms of songs, celebrations, landmarks and symbols. | |

| Curriculum activity: | Description: Give each student and a large piece of paper and have students fold into four squares. Students identify four aspects of culture studied during the lesson. Illustrate how the aspect is (or was) represented in the local community and write a sentence to provide details and examples of each aspect represented. | |
