Grade 2 - 4th Six Weeks

Below are ideas for technology integration that support the 4th six weeks grading period in Grade 2. Contact your Technology Facilitator for assistance.

Unit 4   Follow the Pattern
Lesson 1   Patterns In Our Lives
Curriculum activity:   Students understand that variations in story elements may change the story plot.
Technology idea 1   Retell the Gingerbread Man
    Using edClass activBook e155, students sequence illustrations from the traditional story 'The Gingerbread Man.' For each illustration, students will write a sentence to retell the tale.
Technology idea 2   The Sandcastle
    Using edClass activBook e113 and Microsoft Word, students will put sentences in order to retell a story.

Unit 7   Multiplication/Division
Lesson 1   Exploring Division
Curriculum activity:   Introduce students to the concept of multiplication and division by using concrete objects to create equal groups.
Technology idea 1   Division by Partition
    Using edClass activBook e354 and Microsoft Excel, students will show that they can divide numbers by sharing equally.
     
Unit 7   Multiplication/Division
Lesson 2   Fractions
Curriculum activity:   Name and represent fractional parts of a whole object or a set with denominators of 12 or less, using pattern blocks, fraction circles, and counters.
Technology idea:

Curriculum activity:   Students will also use fraction circles to determine if a fraction is closer to zero, one-half, or one.
Technology idea:   Fraction Activities
    Direct students to open Kidspiration. Go to the More folder and instruct students to open the Fraction Activities lesson template.

Curriculum activity:   Students record fractional parts of a whole group.
Technology idea:   Shade in the Fractions
   

Students use this template to color in fraction parts using the paint bucket in Excel.

iThey will also type in the correct fraction part.

Lesson 1   Properties and Uses of Natural Resources: Soil
Curriculum activity   Students will explore the properties and uses of soil.
Technology idea 1  

Students can use these web sites to create graphic organizers about the properties of soil or uses of soil.

Unit 7   Natural Resources
Lesson 2   Properties and Uses of Natural Resources: Rocks
Curriculum activity:   Students will explore the properties and uses of rocks
Technology idea 1   Thinkfinity Rock Slide Show
    Students will use the slide show to explore physical properties of rocks and how we use rocks.
Technology idea 2   Rock Facts
    Students will use the above link to gather information about how rocks are formed. Students will then use Kidspiration to generate graphic organizers about the different ways rocks are made.
     
Unit 7   Natural Resources
Lesson 2   Properties and Uses of Natural Resources: Rocks
Curriculum activity:   Using a teacher generated graphic organizer, or a blank piece of paper, students will write or draw uses of rocks.
Technology activity:   Students can use Kidspiration to create a document that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 8   Living and Non-Living
Lesson 1   Classifying Living Organisims and Non-Living Objects
Curriculum activity:   Students take a short walk around the school, making observations and recording data about things they see that are living, and things that are non-living.
Technology activity:   Students could use the digital camera to take photos of their observations.

Curriculum activity:   In small groups, have students create a chart or poster explaining:
• Why is an organism classified as a plant or an animal?
• What are the characteristics both plants and animals share?
• What makes them different?
(A Venn diagram would work well here.)
Technology activity 1:   Students could use MS Publisher to create a document that would fullfills this requirement.
Technology activity 2:   Students could use Inspiration to create a Venn Diagram. (Inspiration has a Venn Diagram Template.)
     
Unit 8   Living and Non-Living
Lesson 1   Classifying Living Organisims and Non-Living Objects
Curriculum activity:   Students will create a poster that includes :
• A list of the characteristics of the animals in their group.
• They will need to illustrate these characteristics.
• A generalized statement about their animal group.
Technology activity:   Students can use MS Publisher to create a document that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 8   Living and Non-Living
Lesson 1   Classifying Living Organisims and Non-Living Objects
Curriculum activity:   Students will sort pictures into two groups: living and nonliving and identify
2-3 characteristics for each group.
Technology activity:   Teacher could create a template for students in MS Publisher, Kidspiration, or Inspiration that fulfills this requirement.

Lesson 2   Characteristics of Living Organisims
Curriculum activity:   My Plant Observation Journal
Technology activity:   A template of the Plant Observation Journal  could be created in MS Power Point or MS Publisher. Students could use a digital camera to record the changes the see in the plants. The photos could be inserted into the journal.

Lesson 2   Characteristics of Living Organisims
Curriculum activity:   Students will create a foldable book to identify the characteristics of a living
organism.
Technology activity 1:   Students can use ReadWriteThink Printing Press to create a document that fulfills this requirement. Choose the Booklet link.
Technology activity 2:   Students could use MS Publisher to create a document that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 8   Living and Non-Living
Lesson 3   Characteristics of Non-Living Objects
Curriculum activity:   Students will create a foldable book to identify the characteristics of a nonliving object.
Technology activity 1:   Students can use ReadWriteThink Printing Press to create a document that fulfills this requirement. Choose the Booklet link.
Technology activity 2:   Students could use MS Publisher to create a document that fulfills this requirement.

Lesson 3   Characteristics of Non-Living Objects
Curriculum activity:   Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast a living animal with a nonliving toy animal.
Technology activity :   Inspiration contains a Venn diagram.

Lesson 1   Influential Historical People
Curriculum activity:   Introduces students to qualities important to Americans (national identity) by studying historical figures who have made contributions to the communities in which we live and who have exhibited characteristics of good citizenship, inventiveness or individualism.
Technology idea: 1   Instant Poetry
    Student can use the above link to write a biography poem about an influential historical person. Use the menu bar on the left to locate the biography poem link.

Curriculum activity:   Students create a Bio-poem for Henrietta King to share with class.
Technology idea 1   Students can use MS Publisher to create and illustrate the poem that fulfills this requirement.

Students could use the template to create a Power Point presentation of the Bio-poem.

Lesson 1   Influential Historical People
Curriculum activity:   Students choose one historical figure that they have learned about ...Students, then, draw a picture and write a paragraph about the contributions that person made to the communities in which we live and how the community would be different if that person had not been someone who exhibited inventiveness, individuality or good citizenship.
Technology  idea 1   Students could use MS Publisher or MS Word to create a document that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 7   Influential People in Our Past
Lesson 1   Influential Historical People
Curriculum activity:   They (students) prepare a presentation that will teach the rest of the class about the person researched. This presentation may take the form of posters, bio-poems, mini-murals...
Technology idea 1   Students can use MS Publisher to create the poster, bio-poem or mural that fulfills this requirement.
Technology idea 2   Student can use MS Power Point to create a short presentation that fulfills this requirement.
     
Unit 7   Influential People in Our Past
Lesson 2   Timelines- Influential Historic People
Curriculum activity:   Students will create and interpret timelines. Students practice together and then use their knowledge of timelines to interpret one independently.
Technology idea 1  

Autobiography Time Line

Interactive Timeline

    Students can use the above web sites to create a autobiographical timeline or a timeline about an influential historical person.
