Lesson 1   Measuring Length, Area and Perimeter
Curriculum activity:   Students will select standard units, customary and metric/SI, to measure classroom items then figure area and perimeter of an object.
Technology idea 1   How Long is Your Hand?
    In edClass activBook e315, students measure the length of their hand and, using this as a frame of reference, find objects that have the same length.
Technology Idea 2  

Area on a Geoboard

    In this Connected Tech lesson , students use Geoboards to make rectangles and find their areas by counting square units.

PowerPoint Template

Practice Customary and Metric Measurement
-Slideshow will open full screen.

-Click on Edit>Edit Slides to begin the lesson.

    -Students click on objects and drag them up to a ruler to measure.  They can resize objects to measure different sizes. The last two slides students compare standard to metric (inches to centimeters.) 
     
Teachnology idea 4  

Measure Perimeter and convert in Google Earth

Launch Google Earth and follow the directions in this handout.

     
Unit 10   Geometry
Lesson 1  

Congruency/Symmetry and Patterns

Curriculum activity:   Students will examine two-dimensional patterns to find shapes that are congruent and may have lines of symmetry.
Technology Idea 1  

Flash Turtle: Symmetry Drawing

    Using edClass activBook E670, students practice drawing symmetrical shapes using Flash Turtle, a simple turtle graphics program (included).
Technology Idea 2   Students insert graphics into a Microsoft Word or Kidspiration and then use the line tool to see which objects they can draw a line of symmetry.
     
Unit 10   Geometry
Lesson 2   Two Dimenional Figures
Curriculum activity:   Students will sort and classify two-dimensional shapes using defining attributes.
Technology idea 1   Draw 2 dimensional shapes in Word using the drawing toolbar.  Add text to describe attributes.
Technology idea 2  

Identify Shapes

    Using edClass activBook E695, students look for shapes in a picture and record the number of counted shapes by typing in response boxes.
     
Unit 10   Geometry
Lesson 3   Three- Dimensional Figures
Curriculum activity:   Students classify  three-dimensional figures according to the defining attributes.

Technology idea 2  

Create a graphic organizer in Inspiration.  Insert the solids graphics: Select geometry category and Choose Transparent 3-D Shapes. Insert a text box to write the number of vertices, sides and edges of each shape.

Lesson 1   Forces of Nature: Inside and Out
Curriculum activity:   Students will use a variety of models to demonstrate how forces such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis cause changes in the Earth’s surface.

Lesson 2   Earth Matters: Investigating Rocks and Minerals
Curriculum activity:   Students will collect picturesand things in the local area that show the use of rocks and minerals. They will use their collection to assemble a picture collage.
Technology idea1   Students use the digital camera to take images and put these into a powerpoint to create collage.
Technology idea 2   Create a slide in Microsoft PowerPoint. Use clipart to find multiple images to create collage.

Lesson 3   Earth Matters: Investigating Soil
Curriculum activity:   Students will explore properties of soil and the importance of soil as a natural resource.

Lesson 4   Earth Matters: Earth Movers
Curriculum activity:   Evaluate: Given an assortment of photographs, students will identify and describe
changes in the Earth’s surface caused by one of the following forces, volcano, earthquake, glacier, tsunami or hurricane, tornado, weatheringand erosion, and will explain in oral or written form, how the force caused changes in the Earth’s surface.
Technology idea:   Forces that Change the Earth - Click on the link to download the document for students to complete on the computer rather than pasting to newsprint.

Lesson 5   Earth Matters: Investigating Water and Air
Curriculum activity:   Students will explore the properties of water and gases of the atmosphere and the importance of these natural resources.

Curriculum activity:   Students will identify and then classify natural resources as renewable, nonrenewable, and inexhaustible.

Curriculum activity:   Write a narrative story about saving and spending money. Include a budget and information about the choices made.

Lesson 1   Saving and Spending
Curriculum activity:   Elaborate: Write a class “Choose-Your-Own-Adventure” story to provide students with opportunities to consider consequences of choices.
Technology idea 1:   Students could use MS Power Point to create a final draft of their part of the story. The slides could be linked to create the "Choose-Your-Own-Adventure" story.
     
Unit 7   How Communities Work: Economic Systems
Lesson 1   Saving and Spending
Curriculum activity:   Write a narrative story (fiction or nonfiction) about saving and spending money. Include a budget and information about the choices made. Use
academic vocabulary.
Technology idea 1:   Students could use MS Word or Publisher to create a document that fulfills this required activity.
     
Unit 8   How Communities Work: Economic Systems In Practice
Lesson 1   Scarcity
Curriculum activity:   Explain: Give each student a piece of blank paper and assign each student an Economic Concept word discussed so far in this lesson. Students write the word in large letters at the top of the paper (either landscape or portrait) and then draw a picture that represents the economic concept.
Technology idea 1:   Students could use MS Paint to create a document that fulfills this lesson.
     
Unit 8   How Communities Work: Economic Systems In Practice
Lesson 1   Scarcity
Curriculum activity:   Write a poem or song explaining the effects of scarcity on businesses.
Technology idea 1:  

Students can use one of the following web sites to assist them in creating a poem that fulfills this required activity.
