Unit 2   Gathering New Ideas
Lesson 1   Relaying the Facts
Curriculum activity:   Create a Venn diagram that connects/compares you to a classmate. Devise a visual presentation to present your information to the class. Explain in a short summary the personal connections (similarities and differences) you made with your partner.
Technology idea:   Graphic Organizer
Use Inspiration to create graphic organizer!

Unit 2   Gathering New Ideas
Lesson 2   Where There's a Problem, There's a Solution
Curriculum activity:   Students will identify problems and solutions within a text. They will also understand the relationship between sequential writing and problem/solution text structures found in expository texts.
Technology idea:   Not yet available

Unit 2   Gathering New Ideas
Lesson 3   Identify "What Happened" and "Why"
Curriculum activity:   Select a significant event from your life and design a graphic organizer to explain how it has impacted your life.
Technology idea:   Not yet available

Unit 2   Gathering New Ideas
Lesson 4   Traditions and Views
Curriculum activity:   Select a special tradition celebrated every year in your family. Use one of the text structures to explain your tradition.
Technology idea:   Please note: We are NOT going to install the suggested software, Audacity, on the computers. Rather than having students record their papers, they can just read them aloud to the class.

Math

Unit 4   Operations - Multiplication/Measurments (Area Only)
Lesson 1   Operations - Multiplication Facts
Curriculum activity:   Identify the facts needed to solve problems, create models of the facts, and identify the related fact families given reallife problem situations for selected difficult multiplication facts. Describe the strategy that could be used to recall these same facts.
Technology idea 1:   Know your Multiplication Tables
In edClass activeBook e347, students gain a visual overview of the multiplication facts and how they relate to each other. They enter the values that they have memorized and in doing so, see that of the 100 multiplication facts, there are only 55 to learn. The students are then presented with a multiplication grid that color-codes the facts and acts as a practice quiz.
Technology idea 2:   Numbers and Squares
In edClass activBook e327, students search for square numbers from 1 to 25 by arranging square tiles into square shapes. For an extra challenge explore square numbers from 26 to 100.

Unit 4   Operations - Multiplication/Measurments (Area Only)
Lesson 2   Operations - Multiplication & Measurement
Curriculum activity:   Estimate, model and calculate area when given a measurement problem situation involving whole numbers no more than 2-digits by 2-digits.

Technology idea:

Use "Area" template in Kidspiration 3 under Math Activities

Unit 5   Operations - Division
Lesson 1   Operations - Division Models & Estimation
Curriculum activity:   Create a division story problem when given a 1-digit divisor and 3-digit dividend. Identify the components in the problem, use a model to solve, estimate the solution, and determine if their estimate is an over- or underestimate.

Technology idea:   Edclass activBook: E354- Division by Partition
Show that you can divide numbers by sharing equally. Great activity for introducing the concept of division. The students actually separate the objects into 2 groups.

Unit 5   Operations - Division
Lesson 2   Operations - Division Procedures & Problem Solving
Curriculum activity:   Create a division story problem when given a 1-digit divisor and 3-digit dividend. Identify the components in the problem, solve, and explain what the remainder represents.

Science

Science Fair   Science Fair Projects

Technology idea 1:   Students use "Scientific Method "  Graphic Organzier in Timeliner XE software.  Template is on main page under Sequence Category.

Technology idea 2:   Create a Graph in Excel 2007 - Directions
Students follow these directions to input their data and generate a graph.

Create a Graph in Excel 2007 Tutorial by Gulf Coast of Florida University

Technology idea 3:

Premade Excel Generic Graph Template
by Eric Carle-North Canton Schools.

.Students type in their titles and data and it automatically builds a graph.

Technology idea 4:   Students create a graph of their data from one of the following resources:
Create a graph online with NCES
Create simple bar, line, area or pie graph.  There is a link at the bottom to take a tutorial on how to create graphs.

Technology idea 5:   Using Data Tools- Graph Creator
Good for creating graphs that contain several trials or groups

Technology idea 6:

Students use Kidspiration 3 "Bar Graph Template"

This is located under Math Activities.

Unit 2   Matter
Lesson 1   Matter Matters
Curriculum activity:   Develop super heroes and illustrate their special powers to change states of matter or properties of matter using the reduction or addition of heat, density and buoyancy.

Technology idea:   Students use the "States of Matter Template" in Kidspiration 3. Locate under Science Activities.

Unit 3   Energy
Lesson 1   Light Systems
Curriculum activity:   Observe one of the systems your teacher has provided. In the space below, identify at least
three parts of the system and describe their roles. Then choose one of the parts you identified and predict what would happen to the system if that part were removed.

Unit 3   Energy
Lesson 2   Symmetry
Curriculum activity:   Using a collection of random objects the student will determine if the object is symmetrical using reflections.
Technology idea 1:   Flash Turtle:  Symmetry Drawing
In edClass activeBook e670, students practice drawing symmetrical shapes using Flash Turtle, a simple turtle graphics program (included).

Unit 3   Energy
Lesson 3   Reflection, Rotation, and Translation
Curriculum activity:   Students analyze through illustrations and in writing five two- or three-dimensional items such as seeds, leaves, or shells for symmetry and demonstrate how each object would look after a translation, rotation, and a reflection. The student should explain how the properties of the object are affected by these actions.
