Curriculum activity:   Compare two versions of an oral tradition from different regions and cultures and complete a chart to depict the similarities and differences across texts.

Lesson 2   From Generation to Generation
Curriculum activity:   Students study and compare folktales, tall tales, and fables looking at text structures and the purposes of the forms. Using the research processes of news reporters, they investigate the oral traditions of a particular culture and share their findings with the class.

Lesson 3   From My People to Yours
Curriculum activity:   Interview a family member and write a composition about a special oral tradition in your family or culture.

Lesson 1   Equivalent Fractions
Curriculum activity:   Students use fraction circles, strips and grids to model and generate equivalent fractions. Students create “pizza” fractions and flip books to facilitate their understanding of equivalent fractions.

Lesson 2   Building Fraction Concepts
Curriculum activity:   Students use fraction strips and circles to model and create pictorial representations of fractions greater than 1 (mixed numbers and improper fractions). Grids and number lines are used to related fractions to decimals and to compare and
order fractions.

Lesson 1   Graphs and Tables
Curriculum activity:   Students read, create and interpret bar graphs based on sets of unrelated and related data. Patterns in sets of related data are examined and described using mathematical rules and/or processes.

Unit 4   Earth's Surface
Lesson 1   Weathering and Erosion
Curriculum activity:   Students will identify, describe and summarize events that shape the earth in a narrative story about the journey sediment takes on earth.
Technology idea 1:   Beach Erosion Inspiration Template
   

Students will explore the causes and effects of Beach Erosions.  On the left subsystems of the graphic organizer, students will identify the causes.  They will identify the effects on the right side of the subsystem.  Students will also use the web site that is embedded in this graphic organizer to learn more about beach erosion.

Unit 4   Earth's Surface
Lesson 2   The Secrets of the Past
Curriculum activity:   Students will explore the historical implications of fossils and natural records of time (rocks, tree cookies, etc.) and draw conclusions about “what happened before.”
Technology idea:   Evaluating Fossil Web Sites
   

Students browse six preset web sites about fossils. They evaluate sites using a checklist, then rank the Web sites and explain which ones are the most successful and why.

Lesson 3   Soil Tests
Curriculum activity:   Students will demonstrate an understanding of soils by completing a lab report that supports their inquiry into soil tests.
Technology idea:   Soil Experiment Project
   

Students research soil topics, analyze soil samples for color and texture, and make charts and lab sheets to record data. They conduct an experiment growing bean seeds in various soil types. After recording observations for 20 days, students take digital photographs of their plants. Groups make conclusions and create graphs showing the experiment's results.

Lesson 1   Independence Leads to Change
Curriculum activity:   Create a banner that symbolizes the fight for independence. Then write a one page summary explaining three reasons for the needed changes in government and how these changes influenced the need for independence.

Curriculum activity:   Create a timeline of the events and battles that lead to the independence of Texas. Write a summary explaining the reasons for the battles and events and how they led to the independence of Texas from Mexico and the establishment of a new country.

Technology idea 2:   Build a Timeline
    In edClass Activbook e583, students enter dates and a timeline framework will be automatically built for them in Excel. They then add events, pictures, pop-up text and sounds.

Lesson 3   Texas Leaders
Curriculum activity:   Draft a letter to a leader, past or present, identifying three leadership traits of what is effective leadership. Explain how the leader chosen has influenced your present life.

    Students use Microsoft Word to type the final draft of their letters.
     
Unit 5   Texas Revolution
Lesson 4   The Diversity of Texas
Curriculum activity:   In groups, research a community in your area that was begun by immigrants of early Texas. Using a Texas map, locate and identify the settlement with a brief description on an index card of the cultural, social and economic contribution that group made in the development of Texas.

Curriculum activity:   Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast the Texas Revolution and the Mexican War. Write a summary on how the two wars were a fulfillment of the United States belief in manifest destiny.

Curriculum activity:   Create a pictionary booklet of ten symbols that is a representation of the diverse cultures of Texas. Using the pictionary, write a paragraph on each symbol describing what the symbols mean to you today.

Curriculum activity:   Create a classroom pledge and illustrate a flag that symbolizes courage, strength and loyalty. Then write a speech explaining how the pledge and flag represent patriotism and respect in our classroom as well as in our society.
