1st Grade

  • Welcome to first grade at Florence Hill. This is the most exciting grade to teach! We are so fortunate to be able to watch young readers blossom and grow. Students develop independence, responsibility and pride in first grade.

Our students read and write all day long. We use a balanced literacy approach to reading and writing with weekly shared big books, focus poems, word study, read alouds, small group guided reading lessons and The Daily Five reading workshop. Students have the opportunity to write in various settings, including the use of the Write From the Beginning program.

The students are also being taught to think mathematically and to reason. They learn to see relationships and patterns, solving problems with growing confidence in a “hands on” approach. We love to use math manipulatives to see the math come alive.

Social studies concepts are often integrated into reading time. Our focus is on the relationships with the world around us.

Science lesson often take place in our wonderful school garden. We are able to integrate math and writing too.
