What is STEM?
Texas STEM Education Definition: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is a method of hands-on teaching and learning where students learn to apply academic content by creatively solving real-world problems with innovative design-based thinking to prepare students for future career opportunities.
STEM education is an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to learning that provides hands-on and relevant learning experiences for students. STEM learning is more than the acquisition of knowledge. It engages students and equips them with 21st-Century skills; critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication and collaboration. STEM education establishes connections between the school, work place, community and global economy. Using the engineering design process as the glue, students connect math, science, reading and writing to embed learning. STEM helps students understand and apply academic concepts with real-world skills to create a foundation for college and career success.
Why STEM?
According to labor projections, Texas is expected to have the second-highest percentage of the nation’s future STEM job opportunities.
