Environmental Science

  • “Only within the moment of time represented by the present century has one species - man - acquired significant power to alter the nature of the world. ” ― Rachel Carson, Silent Spring.

The environmental science program for students in grades 6-8. The program is designed to create environmentally knowledgeable citizens capable of understanding the complex environmental issues facing today's world and empowering them to effect change in their communities. The program is designed around a cohort model where the same group of students have their traditional science class and their environmental science class scheduled consecutively. Additionally, students in 8th Grade take a high school level course, Environmental Systems, with the potential to earn high school science credit. The courses are hands on and based in current environmental problems and concerns facing our communities.

The program is based around the powerful idea of service based learning and every grade level will complete a community based, service learning project every quarter. In addition a summer project will also be undertaken. Students in Grade 7 learn how to research, create, carry out, and evaluate their own service learning project using the Earth Force model.
