Virtual Learning Model

  • Grand Prairie ISD is committed to providing a successful online experience for all students who select this option for the 2020-2021 school year.  An important component includes the support from caring adults at home, as well as the within the online classroom environment.  All lessons, assignments, activities, and assessments are created to ensure that students continue to learn at the same pace of the current Grand Prairie ISD scope and sequence, have access to the appropriate and aligned curriculum, and meet all social-emotional needs of the student.  Through an intentionally and well-developed curriculum, students will continue to engage in 21st century learning experiences.  All virtual classes will be designed by Grand Prairie ISD teachers and curriculum specialists and will follow the scheduled classes at the student’s home campus.  To ensure student success, frequent and clear communication among teachers, students, and parents is expected throughout the school year.

    Asynchronous Virtual School Model

This type of instruction may include various forms of digital and online learning, such as direct virtual instruction, prerecorded video lessons or game-based learning tasks that students complete on their own, pre-assigned worksheets, and formative assessments.  Some of the design considerations for this model include:

    • Direct instruction will be provided by a highly qualified GPISD teacher.
    • There will be daily instruction from the teacher, along with independent practice at home.
    • The teacher will communicate daily learning expectations via GPISD’s learning management system (Canvas for secondary/Google Classroom for elementary).
    • Students must complete asynchronous activities assigned daily, five days per week.
    • Daily progress will be verified based on the degree to which the student meets the expectations of the learning plan that the teacher presents.
    • Teachers will be available to students virtually throughout each school day for direct instruction, and small group/individualized instruction.
    • Teachers will provide feedback to students and use district grading guidelines on all assignments.
    • Students will participate in district/state assessments to document learning and growth.
    • Students who choose this option will remain enrolled at their designated campus.
    • A structured schedule will be provided to students indicating required times for participation as well as breaks and lunch.
    • The schedule may reflect short periods of synchronous learning followed by time for independent, asynchronous learning activities.  However, the direct instruction will be recorded for students to access at their convenience if they are unable to login during the live instruction.
    • Remote at-home instruction will be designed for mastery of student learning outcomes based on the academic standards called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each content area.
    • Expectations for coursework and guidelines for grading for In-Person Learning and At-Home Learning will be the same.
    • Attendance and truancy rules apply to all students, including those whose families choose virtual learning.
    • Dual credit course offerings formats will be determined by our college partners at Dallas College, University of Texas at Arlington, and UT OnRamps.

    Synchronous Instruction

As mentioned above, there will be opportunities for students to also participate in synchronous learning. This instructional model involves two-way, real-time, live instruction between teachers and students through a digital device.  Some of the design considerations for this model include:

    • Students attend class on time – per the class schedule.
    • Students will follow the Grand Prairie ISD dress code.
    • Students are ready to learn.
    • Students will show their face on the screen to engage with the teacher virtually.
    • Students will participate in the class.
    • Teachers will provide feedback to students and use district grading guidelines on all assignments.
