-
What is the Spanish Credit by Exam (CBE)?
The Spanish CBE is an acceleration test that offers the Spanish Speaker students the opportunity to gain High School Course Credits, for the Spanish Language Skills that they already know. Based on the student's score on the test they could earn credit for Spanish I, Spanish I and II, or even Spanish I, II and III.
-
What are the benefits of receiving High School credits?
For each Spanish Level credit that your student receives, he or she will be able to save a full year of basic Spanish Instruction! That, will allow them not only to save time but they could:
- Register in Advanced Spanish Courses to continue developing their Spanish to higher academic levels.
- Use that time to register in other electives that they are interested
-
What is prior instruction and how it affects my student's outcomes on the Spanish CBE?
Your student's score is also impacted by whether or not they have had "prior instruction" in Spanish, such as:
- They are currently enrolled in a Spanish class.
- They have completed a Spanish course in the past.
- They participated in a Bilingual or Dual Language Programs.
- They participated in a FLEX or FLES Programs
- They completed a Spanish Immersion Program.
- They completed a Spanish course in a non-accredited private school or home school.
- They studied Spanish in a Spanish speaking country.
If your student has prior instruction, he or she must score at least 70% on the CBE to receive credit.
If your student does not have prior classroom instruction in Spanish, he or she must score at least 80% on the CBE to receive credit.
-
Who qualifies to take the exam?
5th graders that are currently participating in a Dual Language Program (English/Spanish)
All Spanish Speakers in Secondary School (6th grade through 12th grade)
This CBE may be taken with or without prior instruction and is FREE for all enrolled GPISD students. However, students have only two attempts to take the test and receive credit.
-
When is the Spanish CBE going to be offered?
All Campuses will be offering the exam during a week-long testing window, from Monday, November 30th to Friday, December 4th, 2020. The specific date or session that your child is going to attend, will be assigned by your student's home campus.
-
Where is the Spanish CBE testing location?
In-person students will be testing at their home campus.
Remote / Virtual students will be testing online (remotely, from home).
-
Registration for the Spanish CBE
Registration is open! Students or parents could contact their School Administration to complete the registration form.
-
Limitations
A student has only two attempts to gain credit by examination. If a student fails before the beginning of the school year in which the student would ordinarily de required to enroll in that course accordingly with GPISD’s course sequence, the student must satisfactorily complete the course to receive credit for the LOTE course.
-
How do I help my student to get prepared for the test?
You can help by establishing conversations in Spanish about social and academic topics, also you could provide your student a question or prompt in Spanish, for them to write a paragraph. Then, check the vocabulary, the order of the words in the sentences and the grammar. Provide them some feedback.
