How to Report an Absence

  •

Whenever a student is absent, it is important to contact the school within 3 days to avoid having an unexcused absence.  Parents may report student absences in the following ways:

    Online

Absence requests can be submitted online through the Skyward parent portal!  Visit the Skyward page to learn how to access your Skyward account.

    • Once you log in to your Skyward Family and Student Access account, click on Open Family Access.
    • Click on the Attendance tab in the blue menu on the left side of your screen.
      • If you are using a phone, click the plus sign (+) on the upper-left side for the blue drop-down menu.  Then click Attendance.
    • Click on the words Absence Request located in the blue bar toward the top of the screen.
    • A pop-up box will appear. Click the words Add Request in the pop-up box.
    • A new pop-up box will appear.  Enter the date(s), reason, and any comments about the absence in the fields provided.
    • Click Save to submit your absence request to the school.

    Contact the School

Absences can be reported by emailing the attendance clerk at your student's school.  Please be sure to include the Student ID number in your email. That way, the attendance clerk will know exactly whose absence to clear as there are many students with the same or similar names.

    To find your attendance clerk:

    • Select your student's school on the www.gpisd.org homepage.
    • Scroll down and click on Our School, then Our Faculty & Staff.
    • Click on Office Staff in the menu that appears.
      • If you are using a phone, click the plus sign (+) in the box that says Our Faculty & Staff.  Then click on Office Staff in the menu that appears.
    • There, you will see the name and email address of the campus attendance clerk(s).

*You are welcome to call the front office and ask to speak with an attendance clerk.  Be sure to follow up with an email if you are unable to reach someone, or if you are prompted to leave a message. This will ensure that your absence request gets to the school within three days of the absence.

    Send a Note

Parents, you are welcome to bring an excuse/doctor's note to the front office at your student's school.  You may personally deliver the note or you may send it by way of your student. The note must be signed by a parent or guardian, and/or the medical professional who served your student.  Notes signed by students will not be accepted.
