Adapted Physical Education (APE) is specially designed instruction in physical education that is adapted or modified to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities. Specially designed instruction allows students to have access for maximum participation in physical education. This aligns with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA, 2004), which states that physical education is a required service for students ages 3-21 who qualify for special education services due to a specific disability or developmental delay.
The most common areas that APE targets include:
- Physical and motor fitness
- Fundamental motor skills and patterns
- Health related physical fitness
- Motor fitness
- Skills in dance
- Group games and sports
- Recreational and leisure activities
It is our mission at Grand Prairie ISD as Adapted Physical Education (APE) Facilitators to provide students with disabilities the skills necessary for a lifetime of rich leisure, recreation, and sport experiences to enhance physical fitness and wellness. Our focus as APE Facilitators is to identify and instruct students with gross motor delays, address the specific gross motor delays, and when appropriate, prepare the student for participation in general physical education, as well as, recreation and leisure activities.
