Communicable Disease Prevention
Grand Prairie ISD Health & Wellness Services would like to encourage students and staff to take the necessary precautions in reducing the transmission of communicable diseases.
Hand washing is the single most important way to reduce the spread of infectious diseases.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. When tissues are not available, cover your cough with the crease of your arm.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
When to stay home:
- Localized rash causing acute discomfort or systemic rash of undetermined origin
- An oral temperature of 100.0 degrees or greater. An individual must be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication before returning to work or school.
- Vomiting (not related to a single event such as gagging, positioning, mucus, running after eating, or eating spicy food). An individual must be free from vomiting for 24 hours without the aid of any medication before returning to work or school.
- Diarrhea of two or more loose watery stools; One must be free from diarrhea for 24 hours without the aid of any medication before returning to work or school.
- Uncontrolled coughing
- Pink eye or purulent conjunctivitis (defined as pink or red conjunctiva with white or yellow eye discharge). An individual must receive treatment for 24 hours before returning to work or school or provide a note from a health care provider stating that the condition is not contagious.
