Sexual harassment in schools is unwanted and unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature that interferes with a student’s right to receive an equal educational opportunity. It is a form of sex discrimination that is prohibited by Title IX, a Federal law establishing civil rights in education that addresses issues of sex discrimination. GPISD counselors provide guidance at every level of education intended to inform students and parents as well as enable school employees and officials to provide appropriate response to reports of sexual harassment. The ultimate goal is to identify sexual harassment and to take steps to prevent its occurrence at every campus in GPISD.

Tips for Parents
It is common that neither girls nor boys understand the meaning of sexual harassment. They don’t understand that boys can be sexually harassed, too, and that sexual harassment goes beyond unwanted touching.

Parents should 

• Talk about the different forms of sexual harassment and
• Once their child understands what sexual harassment looks like, talk to him/her about ways to handle it.

Please submit the bullying/harassment/dating violence Reporting Form if you have real information about a bullying/harassment/dating violence situation and want to report it without giving your name. Once the form is completed, a copy will automatically be sent to the principal.

• Campuses follow the district BE KIND monthly themes to be promoted through campus activities. Campuses have a school-wide theme which drives campus bullying/dating violence prevention and Kindness Crew activities for the year.

Step 1) Report of Bullying/Harassment/Dating Violence Incident (In-Person Written Report, Written Anonymous Report or Online Anonymous Report - StopIt)

Step 2) Designated Campus Administrator (complete steps 3 and 4 )

Step 3) Notification of incident must be made

• To the parent/ guardian of alleged victim on or before the third business day after the date the incident is reported
• To the parent or guardian of the alleged perpetrator within a reasonable amount of time

Step 4) Investigation must be initiated and completed within 5 school days (complete steps 5 and 6)

Step 5) Results of Investigation

• Determination if disciplinary action is warranted
• Notification to parents of alleged victim
• Notification to parents of alleged perpetrator
• Notification to appropriate GPISD personnel
• Notification to GP Police Department if required

Step 6) Refer Alleged Victim AND Alleged Perpetrator to Counselor for Counseling Support including

• Individual Counseling
• Small Group Counseling
• Crisis Counseling

Title IX Information

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination in the educational setting on the basis of sex. It prohibits discrimination between male and female students in the context of educational programs and activities, including athletics. Stated another way, no student should be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of or discriminated against in any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Title IX protects students from discrimination and harassment connected to any of the academic, educational, extracurricular, athletic, and other programs or activities of schools, regardless of the location. Title IX protects both male and female students from discrimination and/or sexual or gender-based harassment. NOTE also that bullying may also involve harassment.
