AVID Elective

When Does the AVID Elective Begin?

The AVID program starts in 6th grade and continues through 12th grade, supporting students throughout their secondary education journey.

What Does AVID Do for Students?

AVID equips students with the skills and support they need to succeed in rigorous academic settings.

The program:

  • Teaches effective study habits and organizational skills
  • Strengthens writing and critical thinking abilities
  • Provides academic support through tutorials
  • Develops leadership potential
  • Fosters collaborative learning to help students succeed in advanced coursework
  • Guides students through the college application process
  • Offers career exploration opportunities through guest speakers and field experiences

How Are Students Selected for AVID?

AVID is designed for students in the academic middle who demonstrate potential for success in advanced classes. The selection process includes:

  1. Recommendations by teachers, counselors, parents—or self-nomination by the student
  2. Completion of a student application, written response, and interview
  3. Final selection by the AVID site team, which includes an administrator, counselor, AVID coordinator, and core subject teachers

AVID Student Profile

AVID scholars are expected to have responsible behavior, attend school regularly, encompass a positive attitude toward their peers and teachers, and a personal desire to go the extra mile to obtain their college and career dreams.

GPISD AVID scholars come from diverse backgrounds. Some will be the first in their families to attend college, some may be unsure about taking advanced, AP or dual credit courses without support from academic tutors, some may be academically ready, but need support in organization and study habits. AVID scholars may also be motivated to do well but could benefit from increasing their skills to reach their full potential.

Student Commitment

Students selected for AVID are expected to:

  • Enroll in the AVID elective class, held during the regular school day
  • Take college-preparatory coursework, including Honors and AP classes
  • Participate in extracurricular activities and community service
  • Maintain an organized AVID binder/ebinder with a daily planner
  • Set aside time each day for homework, studying, and projects
