Texas Education for Homeless Children & Youth (TEHCY) & McKinney-Vento Program 

A lack of housing, documentation, transportation, or other typical enrollment requirements should not prevent an eligible student from accessing their education.

Eligible students may attend the local attendance-area school or continue attending the school of origin. The school of origin is the school the student attended when permanently housed or the school in which they were last enrolled.

GPISD works with the student, parent/guardian, or unaccompanied youth to consider the student’s best interest when determining school placement.  

Eligible students may receive transportation to and from the school of origin. Transportation decisions are made in accordance with McKinney-Vento requirements and GPISD procedures.

In GPISD:

• Students who live within 2 miles of their campus are considered to be within walking distance.
• Transportation requests of 20 or more miles will receive additional review based on the student's best interest.

For transportation questions or to request assistance, please contact the appropriate school social worker or the TEHCY Coordinator.

Housing instability can affect many areas of a family's life. GPISD works with community organizations and partners to connect students and families with resources that may help address immediate needs and support long-term stability.

The GPISD Social Work Hub partners with GPISD's Kindness Crews, campus social workers, counselors, and community organizations to support GPISD students and families across the district. The Social Work Hub can help connect families with:

• Food assistance
• Clothing and school supplies
• Hygiene products
• School enrollment assistance
• Housing and community resources
• Other family support

Staff are also always welcome to reach out to the GPISD Social Work Hub or the TEHCY Coordinator directly for guidance, questions, or support with a referral.

When in doubt, refer. A student's housing situation may not always be visible. Asking a supportive question and making a referral can be the first step toward connecting a student with the help they need.
