Positive Character Trait Lessons

What are Positive Character Trait Lessons?

Positive Character Trait Lessons help students develop the knowledge, skills, and habits needed to become respectful, responsible, and caring members of their school and community. Through these lessons, students learn to demonstrate positive character traits such as kindness, empathy, perseverance, responsibility, honesty, self-control, and respect while building healthy relationships, making thoughtful decisions, and contributing to a positive school culture. At GPISD, students participate in age-appropriate Positive Character Trait Lessons throughout the school year. These lessons are designed to strengthen character, encourage positive decision-making, promote healthy relationships, and support student success both in school and in life. Senate Bill 9

  • Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) requires public schools to provide instruction to students relating to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. SB 9 also requires public schools to obtain parent/guardian consent for students to receive this instruction.
  • Guidance from the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) and approval by the GPISD School Board is required for the curriculum that will be used to teach each of these topics.
  • Before a student may be provided with instruction related to child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking, SB 9 requires that Grand Prairie ISD obtain written consent from the student’s parent/guardian. Without written consent from a parent/guardian, students will not receive instruction related to child abuse, family violence, dating violence, or sex trafficking.
