Staff Development
Requirements for Teachers, Counselors, and Administrators
According to the Texas Administrative Code, Title 19, Part II, Chapter 89, school districts must ensure that teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the Gifted Program receive specific training in areas related to Gifted Education. In GPISD, these training requirements apply to elementary classroom teachers and secondary PreAP and AP teachers, as well as administrators and counselors who are part of the Campus Selection Committee as outlined below:
- Teachers must receive 30 clock hours of professional development (prior to their assignment to provide gifted services) that includes the nature and needs of gifted students, identification and assessment of gifted students, creativity and instructional strategies, differentiating curriculum for the gifted, and the social and emotional needs of gifted students.
- Teachers without training who provide services as part of the gifted program must complete the 30 hour training within one semester.
- In addition to the initial 30 hours, teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the program for gifted students must receive a minimum of six hours annually of professional development in gifted education.
- Administrators and counselors who are part of the Campus Selection Committee must receive a minimum of six hours in nature and needs and/or program options.
Teachers who are new to GPISD and have had GT training in a prior district may submit documentation to the Advanced Academics Department to request credit.
AP Summer Institute training (APSI) hours may count toward GT training in two areas: Curriculum and Differentiation or can count for the annual update.
Opportunities to receive GT professional development credit are offered in the fall and spring semesters as well as during the summer in GPISD. Online opportunities are also available through TAGT On-Demand and Region 10. Teachers, counselors and administrators may contact their campus GT / Advanced Academics Specialist or the Advanced Academics Department for more information about staff development offerings.
