Welcome to First Grade!
Cristina Aguilar, Noemi Alvarado, Joanna Bobbitt, Carol Mejia-Paz, Meredith Flint, Brenda DavilaThe goal of the first grade team is to help each student become a successful and independent learner. We believe that first grade lays the foundation for a lifetime of learning. We are dedicated to working with you, the parents, to ensure that every child leaves us equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in second grade, and beyond.
First graders are practicing and developing their reading skills on a daily basis, with many opportunities to read throughout the day. The students are practicing reading the weekly focus poem, shared books, and books on their independent level, in guided reading groups with the teacher, as well as in reading workshops. First graders are also learning to write, review, and edit their own compositions. First graders are being taught to think mathematically and reason. They are also practicing their addition, subtraction, and problem-solving skills on a daily basis. First graders are learning how to understand the relationships in the world around them in Social Studies, which is often integrated into daily reading lessons. First graders are exploring Science through hands-on experiments and learning how to use their five senses to make observations on a regular basis.
We look forward to working with you throughout the year. Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to call, email, or schedule a conference with your child’s teacher.
