Frequently Asked Questions
-
How does the Specials calendar work and how often will students attend each Specials class?
Each student will attend five different Specials class during a two week rotation. The Specials classes are Physical Education, Art, Music, REEL and Environmental Science. Each student will attend one Specials class for two days in a row to ensure the maximum amount of curriculum instruction and learning.
-
How is De Zavala different from a traditional elementary school?
We have everything that a normal elementary has, but with added bonuses (ESA and REEL). In the Environmental Science and REEL classes, students are allowed more hands on learning in Science. From learning how to garden, basic animal care, and in depth science learning using the Next General Science Standards, are just a few ways that de Zavala stands out in choosing a school of choice.
-
Do the students get to interact with the animals?
Yes, the majority of the animal care duties are given to the students. While learning about basic animal care, students who are part of the ESA Helpers program will work along with the ESA teacher and aide, cleaning the habitat and feeding the animals. Under direct supervision, students will learn the in’s, out’s, the why and how to take care of each animal in the ESA classroom. Every student, while in the classroom, will have access to learn more about the animals we have in ESA. From animals walks, reading to chickens, and seeing them hop across the room, students will be introduced to different types of animals that inhabit the Environmental Science classroom. More importantly, they will learn the importance of animals in our world.
-
Will students get to help in the gardens?
Every student will take part in the deweeding of beds, planting, watering, and harvesting of all fruits and vegetables we grow on campus. At the end of the harvest season, depending on the amount of fruit and vegetables that were grown, we will have a Winter/Spring Harvest where students will get to enjoy what they have worked to grow. In past harvests, students have had carrot cake, kale chips and salads. They are always surprised that things that come from the ground can taste so good! Our students will learn life long lessons that they will be able to take home to their families and hopefully grown fruits and vegetables.
