As part of Grand Prairie ISD’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety for students and staff members, clear/mesh backpack requirements will be in effect when the 2024-2025 school year begins. This decision is a preventive safety and security measure to ensure our campuses continue to be safe and productive learning environments.

Does the mesh backpack have to be mesh on all sides?
Mesh backpacks that are not see through on the side that is worn against the student's back but see through everywhere else, are permitted.

Are there color and style options for the clear or mesh backpacks?
Yes. All colors and styles are permitted as long as the backpack is see through and has school appropriate logos or designs.

Do the clear/mesh backpack requirements apply to all students?
Yes, all students in grades Pre-K - 12.

Will students in extracurricular activities be allowed to use other types of bags or cases for their extracurricular items?
Yes. Extracurricular sponsors, coaches, and/or directors will work with their campus administration for students to have their bags, such as duffle bags or band instrument cases.

Will students be able to store personal items in a non-transparent pouch or small bag?
Students will be able to carry in their backpacks a pouch no larger than 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches to hold personal items, such as cell phones, money, and hygiene products.

Do students have to have clear lunch bags or lunch boxes?
No. However, lunch bags and lunch boxes are subject to inspection.

Can students use a hybrid clear/mesh backpack?
Yes.

Can the backpack have colored straps?
Yes. The backpack may have colored straps.

What about students who must carry medical items or equipment to school?
Campus nurses will provide campus administration with a list of all students who require medically necessary items.
