Ms. Tina Kates
I have been in education for 24 years this year. From fall of 1995 until spring of 2013, I was a teacher at David Daniels Elementary Academy. During my time there, I had the opportunity to teach and be the team leader for grades 3-5. I began my teaching career at LaMarque Middle School in LaMarque, Texas in the spring of 1995 where I taught 6th grade English/Language Arts. Since the fall of 2013, I had been a 5th grade teacher at Thurgood Marshall Leadership Academy. This year I will be Marshall’s Instructional Coach. I am so excited about this new pathway to acquiring more knowledge.
My philosophy on teaching can be stated in one sentence. Teaching is not a cookie cutter profession where there is one superior method that will enable every child to easily learn a concept. Students are little individuals with different learning styles, histories, quirks and at times a negative self-image. It’s my responsibility as their teacher, to adjust my teaching style and materials for their benefit. It is not about my comfort level or my ego that tells me that my lesson plans are fabulous. If the kids aren’t understanding the lesson, I change it. This has caused me to become even more creative in how I make content relevant. The best way to find out how to make it relevant is to actually find out what they are interested in and then apply it to the concept that I want them to learn.
