Instrumental

No instrumental experience is needed, but preference will be given to those that have experience in a mariachi instrument (violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela, guitarron, or harp).

Students should be ready to do some simple musical techniques such as matching pitch and rhythms. 

Vocal

Singing is a requirement for all students auditioning. No vocal experience is necessary, but students must be willing to try their best. A “simple” prepared mariachi piece is preferred (e.g. Cielito Lindo, El Rey, Las Mañanitas, etc.) but other genres or “simple” songs will be accepted (Happy Birthday, etc.). Students unwilling to sing will likely not be considered for acceptance.

Instrumental

Students should be prepared to play a minimum of 3 major scales or scale variations, 1 octave, on their instrument. Armonía (guitar, vihuela, guitarra de golpe) must demonstrate a grasp of basic major and minor chords, as well as basic mariachi strumming patterns.

The student should be ready to demonstrate proficiency on their instrument through a prepared piece, preferably mariachi. A prepared mariachi piece is preferred, but other genres will be accepted as well.

Vocal

Singing is a requirement for all students auditioning. The student should have a prepared piece to demonstrate vocal strength. The preference is mariachi, but other music will be accepted.

Instrumental

Students should be prepared to play a minimum of 3 major scales or scale variations, 2 octaves, on their instrument. Armonía (guitar, vihuela, guitarra de golpe) must demonstrate a solid grasp of basic major, minor, and 7th chords including barre chords, as well as an understanding of mariachi strumming patterns including Son Jalisciense, Huapango, and Joropo.

The student should be ready to demonstrate proficiency on their instrument through a prepared mariachi piece.

Vocal

Singing is a requirement for all students auditioning. The student should have a prepared mariachi piece to demonstrate vocal strength, technique and interpretation.
