Suicide Prevention
Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities. While its causes are complex and determined by multiple factors, the goal of suicide prevention is simple: reduce factors that increase the risk of suicide (i.e., prior attempts, mood disorders, substance abuse, access to lethal weapons) and increase factors that promote resilience (i.e., mental health care, connection with person of importance, problem-solving skills). It is the 10th leading cause of death among Americans. But suicide deaths are only part of the problem. Suicide attempts impact a larger population—more individuals survive suicide attempts than die.
