Counseling Services

The counseling program provides an array of services, working with students and school staff to facilitate students’ learning and success. Counselors provide instruction and services that focus on the academic, career, and personal/social domains. I love to consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, and social workers to develop plans to help students succeed. Elementary school counselors implement the counseling program by providing the following:

• Classroom Guidance
• Academic Planning
• Responsive Services
• System Support

Group Counseling - Referrals for group counseling may be made by parents, teachers, and administrators. Group counseling consists of 4-6 students and last 5-8 weeks. Some of the group topics that may be offered are:

• Anger
• Friendship
• Divorce
• Grief/Loss
• Self-Esteem
• Stress/Anxiety

Social Emotional Learning - We teach Social Emotional Learning Lessons in every classroom each month using the Second Step curriculum. The main focus of these lessons is to provide: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision Making, Relationship Skills, and Social Awareness.  The goal of these lessons is to provide students with skills they can use in everyday life.  A counseling newsletter will be sent home each month sharing more about the topic and upcoming school wide activities.  A copy of the newsletter will also be posted on the Whitt Fine Arts Academy Counseling webpage.

College and Career - GPISD counselors guide students from the “Cradle to Career”. It is my goal to educate students about the plethora of colleges and careers available for them to explore. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of college and career activities throughout the year. Some of those activities include Xello, Career Poster Contest, Career Fair and participation in GenTX Week.
