NIEA's Hill Day a Success

On Thursday, February 25th, NIEA hosted its annual Legislative Event. This event offered an opportunity for Native education advocates to learn from nationalexperts and current Administration officials, meet with congressional staff, and collaborate with colleagues about pressing issues regarding Native education. NIEA Hill Day hosted informative panels focused on:

  • Implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
  • Educational Budget and Appropriations in Fiscal Year 2017
  • Teacher Recruitment and Retention

Hill Day attendees also heard updates from the White House, Department of Education, and Bureau of Indian Education. An informative congressional briefing emphasized the need to incorporate mental health support systems through school wide policies to better support Native students holistically.

Lastly, congressional speakers shared a few words on the passage of the ESSA, 2017 budget priorities, along with how their offices are working alongside tribal communities to better support Native youth across the board. Speakers included:

  • Representative Kline, Chairman, Education and Workforce Committee
  • Senator Barrasso, Chairman, Senate Committee on Indian Affairs
  • Senator Tester, Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Indian Affairs
