Honoring Native Veterans with the National Native American Veterans Memorial

National Native American Veterans Memorial now open

Today we mark the completion of the National Native American Veterans Memorial with a virtual program honoring the service and sacrifice of Native veterans and their families. The program includes tributes to Native veterans and a virtual tour of the memorial. Online at https://americanindian.si.edu/visit/washington/nnavm

Here are a few more ways to recognize and learn about Native veterans:

Conversation with the authors of Why We Serve
Thursday, November 12, 2 PM Eastern time
Take part in a Zoom webinar with Alexandra Harris and Mark Hirsch, co-authors of the museum’s new book Why We Serve: Native Americans in the United States Armed Forces. Harris will discuss the warrior stereotype of Native service members, as well as actual traditions of war and peace within Native American communities. Following the talk, Hirsch hosts a Q&A with attendees. Free, but advance registration is required.

Why We Serve exhibition
Launching on the museum's website today, the exhibition Why We Serve tells poignant, personal stories of Native American veterans. It details the history of more than 250 years of Native American participation in the military, from colonial times to the present day. Visit the exhibition online or see the banner version, on view in the museum’s Potomac Atrium.

Native Words, Native Warriors educational module
This module, part of the museum’s Native Knowledge 360° educational initiative, honors the legacy of Native Code Talkers. By creating secret military communications based on their tribal languages, these servicemen significantly aided Allied victories during World Wars I and II.

Native American Veterans Memorial collection
Celebrate the striking new National Native American Veterans Memorial designed by Oklahoma artist Harvey Pratt (Cheyenne and Arapaho) with this Warriors Circle of Honor Blanket and National Native American Veterans Memorial T-shirt. Additional gifts from the Native American Veterans Memorial Collection can be found at the Smithsonian store.

American Indian Magazine
The fall issue of American Indian Magazine features an enduring tribute to Native American veterans. Read it online, or become a member and receive your subscription by mail.
